As well as having the above attributes you will also need to know the formal stuff!
A qualification in catering and/or professional cookery, experience dealing with high volume covers, managing/supervising a team, and a real drive to work efficiently to enjoy your time on the mountains with your team!
Winter 2016/17 will be my tenth season with SkiBound. I did my first season in Valliore as Head Chef and then in Tignes. It was after my first season in Tignes that I was hooked and started doing summer work as well. I then moved to The Skilt in les Menuires where I took a step back to the position of Chef de Partie to learn from a French Head Chef and then stepped back up to Head Chef at The Skilt, I have spent every winter there since. My winters are followed by working for either Travelbound at their beautiful Chateau or for SkiBound summer working across all resorts where I downhill mountain bike in my off time.
Favourite part of the job
My favourite part of the job is feeling a sense of pride knowing that the food our guests receive is thoughtfully prepared and tailored to their needs. Consistently receiving positive feedback makes all the time spent in the kitchen with our team preparing for service worth it.
Best work memory
My best memory cannot be limited to just one. There are so many, you meet so many cool and interesting people every season and they become friends for life. Being out on the mountains with new and old friends on a blue sky, powder day, making the first tracks off piste has to be one of the best memories.
Why should you join Skibound
I think everyone should at some point fly the nest and see the world, working for SkiBound has definitely helped me achieve that. I’ve come from working/living in a small seaside town in the UK to working all over the French Alps. And in-between I have seen America, travelled the Hawaiian Islands and even worked in Canada. I’ve met some awesome people along the way that I would have otherwise never of met. SkiBound has given me the opportunity to learn to ski, snowboard and mountain bike.
What do you do during your time off?
Time off is spent in many ways, skiing being the obvious one, but there’s the local gym and sports centre where you can swim, play indoor football, tennis etc. There are great places for you to go out and enjoy some authentic French cuisine. During the summer months you can hit the mountains on your bike, road cycle and if you’re brave enough you can tackle the Alpe d’Huez 21 bends, famous part of the tour de France.
What qualities do you need to work a Season?
To be a Seasonaire you must have an open mind and be ready for anything. It doesn’t matter if you’re loud or quiet you will have an awesome time. There can be tough times but if you can be ready to just get stuck in you’ll be fine. Being primarily a winter season it does help if you like the cold but as long as bring your thermals you’ll be sorted. You don’t need to have previously skied or snowboarded as the team will help you learn.
